4 Must-See Destinations Near Puerto Vallarta for your Next All-Inclusive Vacation
If you're planning an all-inclusive vacation to Puerto Vallarta, you're probably already looking forward to the convenience and relaxation of having everything in one place. But there's a whole lot more to this region than just the resort. From the laid back charm of Bucerías and Sayulita to the highlands of San Sebastián del Oeste, these nearby destinations offer unique experiences just a short drive away. During our trip, we explored all of these on our own with Uber with the exception of San Sebastián (we did a tequila tasting/town tour), but if you're not comfortable venturing out on your own, there are plenty of guided tours available to help you discover these gems with ease.
Bucerías
Bucerías is a charming coastal town just a short drive from Puerto Vallarta, making it an easy escape from the resorts for a taste of local life. Named after the Spanish word for "place of the divers" (bucear), Bucerías once served as a hub for pearl divers in the region. While the town is conveniently close to many hotels, we found that it wasn’t exactly our style. The beach is beautiful, and there’s plenty of charm in its narrow streets, but we found the street vendors a bit too pushy at times, which made it harder to enjoy a relaxing stroll. However, it’s very easy to navigate, and the town is full of shops, restaurants, and local art galleries to explore. Bucerías is a great place to spend a few hours if you're staying nearby and want to check out a more authentic, local vibe. Just be prepared for the hustle from the vendors, and if you prefer a quieter experience, you might want to visit during off-peak hours.
Sayulita
Nestled along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Sayulita is a vibrant little town where the rhythm of the ocean meets the pulse of bohemian charm. Known for its stunning surf breaks, it attracts wave riders from around the globe, whether they’re seasoned pros or first-timers looking to catch their first wave. The town itself feels effortlessly cool, with colorful streets lined with boutiques, cafes, and street vendors serving up mouth-watering tacos, fresh ceviche, and juicy fruit cups.
One of the town’s signature touches are the street dogs that roam freely, adding to the relaxed, communal vibe. These pups are as much a part of Sayulita as the surfboards and the sunsets. While they might approach you with a wagging tail, they’re mostly content to find a sunny spot to nap or scavenge for scraps along the cobblestone streets. It’s hard not to smile when you see these friendly dogs lounging at cafes or strolling by beachgoers, contributing to the carefree spirit of the town.
Wander through the streets, and you’ll find a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. The local food scene is a true highlight – the streets come alive with the smell of sizzling meats, tangy salsas, and grilled seafood, offering a little something for every craving. It’s the kind of place where everyone seems to be on "island time," and there’s no rush to be anywhere except in the moment. Whether you're there to surf, eat, or just soak in the sunshine, Sayulita has a way of making you feel like you’ve stumbled onto your own little paradise.
Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is a coastal gem that blends tradition and modern charm effortlessly. One of the highlights of this vibrant city is the Malecón, a beautiful seaside promenade where you can stroll along the ocean, take in stunning views, and watch local artists and performers add to the lively atmosphere. Whether you're watching the sunset or enjoying the sculptures that dot the walkway, the Malecón feels like the heart of Puerto Vallarta.
The food in Puerto Vallarta is another standout. From fresh seafood to flavorful street tacos, there’s something for every palate. The local restaurants serve up dishes full of bold, fresh flavors that you won't forget, whether you're dining with a view of the water or tucked away in a quiet corner of the town.
For those with a sense of adventure, exploring the rocky coastline in search of crabs adds a fun, playful element to your visit. The tide pools are full of life, and it's easy to get lost in the discovery of tiny creatures clinging to the rocks.
And then there's the architecture. Puerto Vallarta is known for its charming buildings, but the highlight has to be the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Its intricate design and stunning details make it a must-see. The church stands tall in the town’s heart, its iconic crown-topped tower a reminder of the rich history and culture that runs through the city. Between the views, the food, and the local treasures, Puerto Vallarta offers a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration.
San Sebastián del Oeste
San Sebastián del Oeste is a hidden gem tucked away in the mountains just outside Puerto Vallarta. Our tour with Vallarta Adventures took us on a journey back in time to this quaint, charming town where history and nature seamlessly blend. The cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved architecture give you a glimpse of what life was like in the past, with colonial-era buildings standing tall against the backdrop of lush green hills.
One of the highlights of our visit was discovering a local silver shop. The craftsmanship and quality of the silver pieces were stunning, and it was a treat to see artisans at work. It really added to the authentic, small-town feel of San Sebastián del Oeste. The overall vibe of the place was so peaceful and quiet, a welcome contrast to the more bustling areas we’d visited. It felt like stepping into another time—one that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the simple beauty of the surroundings.
We also ventured out to the agave fields in La Hermita. The sight of the vast fields stretching out before us was breathtaking, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the process behind the region’s famed tequila. Our tour wrapped up with a tequila tasting, where we learned about the careful craftsmanship that goes into each bottle and got to sample a few different varieties.
I’m usually not a big fan of tours, preferring to explore at my own pace, but this experience was different. The knowledge and passion of the guides, combined with the stunning surroundings, made the trip feel personal and special. It was an unexpected highlight of our time in the region—San Sebastián del Oeste left us with memories of both history and natural beauty that we won’t forget.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Puerto Vallarta, Bucerías, Sayulita, and San Sebastián del Oeste each offer their own unique slice of Mexican charm, making them unforgettable stops for anyone visiting the region. From the vibrant energy of Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón and delicious food scene, to Sayulita’s laid-back beach vibe and the beauty of its surf culture, each town has something special to offer. San Sebastián del Oeste, with its quiet streets, rich history, and stunning agave fields, provided a peaceful escape into the past. Whether you’re wandering cobblestone streets, tasting local delicacies, or enjoying the breathtaking landscapes, these towns are full of memorable experiences that make for an enriching and diverse trip.
