4 Must-See Destinations Near Puerto Vallarta for your Next All-Inclusive Vacation

If you're planning an all-inclusive vacation to Puerto Vallarta, you're probably already looking forward to the convenience and relaxation of having everything in one place. But there's a whole lot more to this region than just the resort. From the laid back charm of Bucerías and Sayulita to the highlands of San Sebastián del Oeste, these nearby destinations offer unique experiences just a short drive away. During our trip, we explored all of these on our own with Uber with the exception of San Sebastián (we did a tequila tasting/town tour), but if you're not comfortable venturing out on your own, there are plenty of guided tours available to help you discover these gems with ease.

Bucerías

Bucerías is a charming coastal town just a short drive from Puerto Vallarta, making it an easy escape from the resorts for a taste of local life. Named after the Spanish word for "place of the divers" (bucear), Bucerías once served as a hub for pearl divers in the region. While the town is conveniently close to many hotels, we found that it wasn’t exactly our style. The beach is beautiful, and there’s plenty of charm in its narrow streets, but we found the street vendors a bit too pushy at times, which made it harder to enjoy a relaxing stroll. However, it’s very easy to navigate, and the town is full of shops, restaurants, and local art galleries to explore. Bucerías is a great place to spend a few hours if you're staying nearby and want to check out a more authentic, local vibe. Just be prepared for the hustle from the vendors, and if you prefer a quieter experience, you might want to visit during off-peak hours.

Sayulita

Nestled along Mexico’s Pacific coast, Sayulita is a vibrant little town where the rhythm of the ocean meets the pulse of bohemian charm. Known for its stunning surf breaks, it attracts wave riders from around the globe, whether they’re seasoned pros or first-timers looking to catch their first wave. The town itself feels effortlessly cool, with colorful streets lined with boutiques, cafes, and street vendors serving up mouth-watering tacos, fresh ceviche, and juicy fruit cups.

One of the town’s signature touches are the street dogs that roam freely, adding to the relaxed, communal vibe. These pups are as much a part of Sayulita as the surfboards and the sunsets. While they might approach you with a wagging tail, they’re mostly content to find a sunny spot to nap or scavenge for scraps along the cobblestone streets. It’s hard not to smile when you see these friendly dogs lounging at cafes or strolling by beachgoers, contributing to the carefree spirit of the town.

Whether you're watching the sunset or enjoying the sculptures that dot the walkway, the Malecón feels like the heart of Puerto Vallarta.

The food in Puerto Vallarta is another standout. From fresh seafood to flavorful street tacos, there’s something for every palate. I’m usually not a big fan of tours, preferring to explore at my own pace, but this experience was different. The knowledge and passion of the guides, combined with the stunning surroundings, made the trip feel personal and special. It was an unexpected highlight of our time in the region—San Sebastián del Oeste left us with memories of both history and natural beauty that we won’t forget.
